IMPORTANCE OF AN SSL CERTIFICATE

What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL(Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a type of digital certificate that provides authentication for a website and enables an encrypted connection.

They are used to secure and encrypt sensitive information like credit cards, usernames, passwords, and other private data sent over the Internet.

Your website will be branded HTTPS in its URL address once the certificate is configured/installed.

Why Buy an SSL Certificate Now?

Latest Google Chrome updates now show visitors a ‘Not Secure’ message in the URL if your website is not HTTPS (i.e. does not have an SSL certificate). When this happens, visitors are more likely to refrain from entering information, making purchases, or even signing up for your email list. As a matter of fact, most simply leave the site on seeing the message.

Google will also rank websites without an SSL certificate lower on the search results page (SERP), affecting your SEO efforts, traffic and revenue at the same time.

Essentially, SSL certificates are required to:

  • Encrypts Sensitive Information: Protect your clients’ data from prying eyes.
  • Provides Authentication by ensuring that you are sending information to trusted and secure servers.
  • Builds Trust: Visitors will trust your website more when they see visual cues like a lock icon or a green bar and will therefore be more likely to buy from you.

Types Of SSL Certificates.

There are three different types of SSL certificates each providing a different level of security. The levels of security are measured by the number of domains/ subdomains covered among other factors.

Domain validated (DV) These certificates only verify who owns the site. It’s a simple process where the Certificate Authority (CA) will send an email to the website’s registered email address in order to verify its identity. No information about the company is required.

Organizationally validated (OV) To receive an OV certificate, a Certificate Authority (CA) must validate certain information, including the organization, physical location, and its website’s domain name. This process typically takes a couple of days.

Extended Validation (EV)  This type of certificate is a must-have for websites that handle sensitive information. To check if a site is using an EV certificate, check that the browser’s URL bar contains a padlock and the company name is listed in green. It has the highest level of security and is the easiest to identify. In order to issue an EV certificate, the CA performs an enhanced review of the applicant to increase the level of confidence in the business. The review process includes an examination of corporate documents, confirmation of applicant identity, and checking the information with a third-party database.
